Acanthurus sohal is a stunning, highly territorial marine fish native to the Red Sea and western Indian Ocean. Known for its bold stripes and aggressive behavior, it’s a favorite among experienced saltwater aquarists.
Natural Habitat
- Native Range: Northwestern Indian Ocean — especially the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Persian Gulf
- Environment: Outer edges of fringing coral reefs exposed to wave action
- Depth Range: Typically found from 1 to 20 meters (3 to 66 feet)
Diet
- Primary Diet: Herbivorous — feeds mainly on filamentous and macroalgae
- In Captivity: Requires a varied diet including:
- Dried seaweed (nori)
- Spirulina-based flakes and pellets
- Occasional meaty foods like mysis shrimp for variety
- Feeding Frequency: 3–4 times daily to support high activity levels
Behavior and Temperament
- Territorial: Extremely aggressive, especially toward other tangs or similar-shaped fish
- Best Kept: As a single specimen unless in a very large tank
- Activity: Active swimmer; needs ample space and strong water flow
- Defensive Adaptation: Possesses a sharp, scalpel-like spine at the base of the tail, used for defense
