Longfin Bannerfish (Heniochus acuminatus) – Care, Diet & Habitat
Heniochus acuminatus, also known as the Longfin Bannerfish or Pennant Coralfish, is a striking marine species admired for its elegant appearance and peaceful nature. It’s a popular choice for saltwater aquariums; however, it requires specific care conditions to thrive in captivity.
Habitat
- Distribution: Indo-Pacific region — from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii, southern Japan, and northern Australia
- Environment: Coral reefs, lagoons, and reef slopes
- Depth Range: 2 to 75 meters, commonly found at depths shallower than 15 meters
Diet
- Zooplankton: A primary food source, including tiny crustaceans like copepods and amphipods that drift in the water column.
- Benthic Invertebrates: Small organisms living on or near the seabed, such as worms and tiny mollusks.
- Coral Polyps: Occasionally nibbles on soft and stony corals, which is why it’s not considered reef-safe in aquariums.
- Algae: May graze on filamentous algae or algae-covered surfaces, although it’s not a primary herbivore.
- Detritus: Consumes organic matter and decomposing material found on reef surfaces.
- Cleaning Behavior (Juveniles): Young individuals sometimes act as cleaner fish, feeding on parasites and dead tissue from other fish
Reproduction
- Forms monogamous pairs in the wild; pelagic spawners (release eggs and sperm into open water)
- Captive Breeding: Rare and difficult; not commonly achieved by hobbyists.
